iNSIDEoUT is a youth-led (and youth-founded) organization by and for LGBTQI+ youth. Based in the NC Triangle area, we strive to connect and support all LGBTQISA-queer individuals and groups near and far. We network Gay/Queer-Straight Alliances, organize events such as Queer Prom, provide resources for members and groups, and much, much more. We welcome all friendly people to be part of our community and big, caring, queer family!
The iNSIDEoUT Board
The iNSIDEoUT Board is a group of members responsible for organization and planning in order to see that the aspirations of iNSIDEoUT and it’s members can be fulfilled! We spend time organizing events such as Fabufest (an annual winter retreat), Durham Pride, Queer Prom, Hangout Hours, the annual Banquet & Gaiety, Summer Leadership Retreat, and more. The Board is elected every year by the previous Board through an application process. Follow us on Instagram @Insideout180. We’d love to hear from you!
The Board is excited to meet you! We are:
El: Hey! I am El. I love math, music, and my dog Rosie. I enjoy watching movies, especially old and/or nerdy ones. I do Ariel dance and theater. I will be the meeting coordinator for the upcoming year of iNSIDEoUT. I can’t wait to see all of you lovely people.
Kellum: I’m Kellum! I love drawing, writing, and anime. I’m super excited to be on the Board this year as the Activism Chair!
Emerson: Hi! I’m Emerson! I love science (chemistry nerd!), drawing, writing, reading, the color purple, horses, and my dog is my best friend. I’m so excited to be this year’s communications chair and build our network and community of queer youth.
The iNSIDEoUT Senate
The Senate is growing part of iNSIDEoUT! The Senate is made up of members from local GSAs and QSAs and schools. They come together to brainstorm ideas, share resources, and change their communities and world. Ideally, there will be a representative from every GSA/QSA in the area to create a wonderful pool of intelligence, resources, and love.
Sterling Bentley, he/him/his, Executive Director: Sterling comes to us with a passion for social justice through an intersectional lens. He has a background in community organizing and working towards queer liberation. He is currently working on a project to make it easier for transgender and gender non-conforming people to better advocate for themselves in a medical setting as part of Equality NC’s Rural Youth Empowerment Fellowship. In his free time, you can find him telling dad jokes at a local barber shop, taking photos of his sweet rottweiler, Georgia, or trying to get JVN’s attention on Instagram with his hair game.
Lucia Drinkwalter: Lucia is an awesome rock guitarist who’s into coding and women’s studies. Lucia is a student at UNC and was on the iNSIDEoUT Board in high school. She loves getting inspired by Insideout youth, and JVN from Queer Eye.
Members of iNSIDEoUT’s first Board – Siobhan Burke-Siegemund (Homeschooled), Brandon Byers (NC School of Science and Math), Lena Eckert-Erdheim (Durham School of the Arts), and Ashleigh Pippin (Sanderson High School) – began working together in the Spring of 2005. In October 2005, with the support of their undergraduate advisor, Robert Wells (UNC-Chapel Hill), and their adult allies, Amy Glaser and Dale Wolf, they organized a statewide rally and march to advocate for the passage of the School Violence Prevention Act. In March, 2006, on the lawn at Weaver Street Market, they chose the name iNSIDEoUT, envisioning something even bigger, something they knew had only just begun. In May of that year, iNSIDEoUT gathered their peers from 19 high schools in the Triangle for the First Annual iNSIDEoUT Banquet and Gaiety, elected a new board for the coming year, and together formulated a mission and vision. In 2009, iNSIDEoUT created Outside In, an adult-run 501(c)3, to provide legal backing and increase capacity. In 2011, they started UPSIDEDOWN, a group for younger people.
