Hello, friend! iNSIDEoUT is a youth-led (and youth-founded) organization by and for LGBTQI+ youth. Based in the NC Triangle area, we strive to connect and support all LGBTQISA-queer individuals and groups near and far. Networking of Gay-Straight Alliances and Queer-Straight Alliances, organization of events such as Queer Prom, and providing resources for members and groups are only a few of the things iNSIDEoUT endeavors to accomplish. We welcome all friendly people to be part of our community and big, caring, queer family!
The iNSIDEoUT Board
The iNSIDEoUT Board is a group of members responsible for organization and planning in order to see that the aspirations of iNSIDEoUT and it’s members can be fulfilled! We spend time organizing events such as Fab-U-Fest (an annual winter retreat), Durham Pride, Queer Prom, Hangout Hours, the annual Banquet & Gaiety, Summer Leadership Retreat, and more. The Board is elected every year by the previous Board through an application process. You can contact us through our email address boardinsideout[@]gmail.com, Twitter, Tumblr, or Facebook. We’d love to hear from you!
The iNSIDEoUT Senate
The Senate is a new and growing addition to iNSIDEoUT! The Senate is another organizing group made up of members from local GSAs and QSAs. They come together to brainstorm ideas, share resources, and change their communities and world. Ideally, there will be a representative from every GSA/QSA in the area to create a wonderful pool of intelligence, resources, and love.
Amy Glaser: Amy began working with queer youth in the Triangle in the Summer of 2004, programming activities to network and assist GSA leaders and other youth with organizing and activism. In addition to co-founding and working with iNSIDEoUT, Amy is currently writing a dissertation about youth liberation.
Robert Wells: Robert is one of iNSIDEoUT’s founding members. A former teacher, Robert is currently a freelance writer. He lives with his cat, Jimmy.
Members of iNSIDEoUT’s first Board – Siobhan Burke-Siegemund (Homeschooled), Brandon Byers (NC School of Science and Math), Lena Eckert-Erdheim (Durham School of the Arts), and Ashleigh Pippin (Sanderson High School) – began working together in the Spring of 2005. In October 2005, with the support of their undergraduate advisor, Robert Wells (UNC-Chapel Hill), and their adult allies, Amy Glaser and Dale Wolf, they organized a statewide rally and march to advocate for the passage of the School Violence Prevention Act. In March, 2006, on the lawn at Weaver Street Market, they chose the name iNSIDEoUT, envisioning something even bigger, something they knew had only just begun. In May of that year, iNSIDEoUT gathered their peers from 19 high schools in the Triangle for the First Annual iNSIDEoUT Banquet and Gaiety, elected a new board for the coming year, and together formulated a mission and vision. In 2009, iNSIDEoUT created Outside In, an adult-run 501(c)3, to provide legal backing and increase capacity. In 2011, they started UPSIDEDOWN, a group for younger people.
