Here are some answers to frequently asked questions we get!
What does iNSIDEoUT do?
We hold regular events and programs with youth from North Carolina. We visit schools to support and connect youth in and out of GSAs/QSAs. We dream big over the summer, and spend our year making awesome stuff happen. We love each other; we dance a lot; we tell jokes and share stories. We try to change the world.
Who runs iNSIDEoUT?
iNSIDEoUT is run by a 5- or 6-person youth board, alongside a larger, ever-expanding Senate. We hope for the Senate to grow to include at least two representatives from every GSA/QSA and other similar group. The Board and Senate receive support from 2 or 3 adult staff.
What about transportation to events and meetings?
Email us if you need a ride! Our members travel from Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Hillsborough and more. If you are in or near the Triangle, we can try to help you find a ride. Also, let us know if you can help drive others.
What are the typical ages of iNSIDEoUT members?
Members are generally between 13 and 19 years old, but we are flexible with ages. Anyone who considers themselves youth is welcome. If you are younger and looking for a group, upsidedown is a wonderful group for children roughly ages 12 and under.
Where does iNSIDEoUT meet?
We meet all over the Triangle (Wake, Durham, and Orange counties in North Carolina), rotating locations so that more people can attend. All youth are welcome. If you live in another part of the state and want us to visit you there, let us know!
What does “LGBTQI+” mean?
LGBTQI+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or intersex, plus anything else you happen to identify as, including straight, genderqueer, princess boi, or anything else. We want to be as inclusive as possible!
What is a GSA/QSA?
“GSA/QSA” stands for Gay-/Queer-Straight Alliance. These are awesome, LGBTQI+-affirming clubs, usually in schools, that do anything from providing a supportive, safe space to organizing large-scale collective actions, and so much more.
Do I have to be in a GSA/QSA to be in iNSIDEoUT?
No! All youth are welcome at our events, whether or not you have a GSA/QSA.

What is the iNSIDEoUT Senate?
The QSA/GSA Senate serves as another organizational group alongside the Board. The Senate was created for two main goals: representation and inspiration. The Senate is composed of one member of every school or GSA/QSA, so that we can therefore have representation from all schools. These members will be able to share the needs of their school, and also bring information from iNSIDEoUT to their GSA/QSA. We also want the Senate to brainstorm new ideas, consider future events, and work together with the Board in making iNSIDEoUT’s visions come to life! Their collective action and inspiration are the drive to making ideas become reality!
How does my group become part of The iNSIDEoUT Senate?
Register your GSA/QSA or other like-minded group here. Then we will come visit you and you can become part of the Senate.
How can iNSIDEoUT help with my QSA/GSA?
We can come visit you in person and bring treats and good energy. We can run a workshop for your QSA/GSA on anything you desire (anti-racism, oppression, queer theory, gender, working with admin, fundraising, QSA/GSA leadership, or anything else). Or we can come and just listen and learn about your QSA/GSA. If you have exciting things you want to do that extend beyond your QSA/GSA, we can help you make them happen, with funding, publicity, etc. We can connect you with other QSA/GSA leaders, other students from your school, and a whole world of allies and support. To arrange a visit from iNSIDEoUT to your group, please register or invite us.
