Our hope is to build safe spaces in every community, and for youth to feel like they have a place where they can be themselves. We hold regular events and programs with youth from the Triangle, (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill). We visit schools to support and connect youth in and out of GSAs/QSAs or similar groups. We dream big over the summer, and spend our year making awesome stuff happen. We love each other; we dance a lot; we tell jokes and share stories. We try to change the world.
Our Programs and Events:
Hangout is our year round (Sept.-May) programming that consists of two hours for youth to connect and hang out in a queer-positive, non-judgmental space. We will be posting this year’s Hangout schedule soon! Stay tuned!
Annual Board Retreat:
Our board retreat is how we kick off the year! It generally takes place over a weekend in late August, where we set our calendar and goals for the year. It’s a great time for us to get to know one another better, dream big, and imagine the future we are going to shape together.
Our Halloween party is designed to be a safer space for queer youth and allies to come have fun, dress up, and dance of course!
This overnight workshop typically takes place in the winter. This past year’s topic was queer justice for both allies and queer youth. We discussed ways of supporting one another, how to enact change in our communities, and visualized a more just and liberated future.
Pride Lock-In/March: It has become a tradition that iNSIDEoUT leads the Pride march around Duke’s East Campus in Durham. In 2018, we held a sleepover nearby and walked over together to begin our day of community celebrations.
Kid’s Zone by iNSIDEoUT & UpSideDown: In 2018 we were in charge of the Kid’s Zone at Pride. We set up fun activities like hula-hooping and face painting. We look forward to being a part of this year’s festivities as well!
Backwords, is the annual zine we produce that showcases the amazing talent and knowledge of queer youth. Here are some examples of recent covers:
Our mission is to create safer spaces in our community. Each spring we host a Queer Prom where youth can come have fun, dance, and be their whole selves. Our most recent prom, It’s Not A Phase: Metamorphosis, took place at the beautiful SEEDs Community Garden.
Annual Banquet and Gaiety:
The Banquet and Gaiety is our End-of-Year celebration where we honor the community of youth activists and the amazing teachers, organizations, parents and others that support them.
